Your journey to success begins with meeting your instructors
and ends in moving you into your college classes. Click on the numbers
or the graphic links below to view the other experiences
you will have as you follow the Mindquest Pathway to Success.
1. Meet your instructors
College Prep instructors are specially trained to help you learn online. One of the first things they'll do is show you how to navigate the courses and how to send your assignments by e-mail.
2. Create your College Prep Learning Plan
When you start the program, your instructor may invite you to take both a reading and study skills assessment. If you haven't done so already, you'll also have the opportunity to take the Accuplacer Test used for college placements in Minnesota) and to write your Learning Profile. Using the information from these assessments about your strengths and about areas where improvement is recommended,
you and the instructor will develop your individual College Prep Learning Plan. This plan will be your "map" for moving along
the pathway to college success. It will list the courses
and modules you'll be taking and the timeframe for
completion. As you go along, you and your instructor
can change your plan to fit your goals.
3. Get individualized help
One of the most exciting parts of the
Mindquest Academy is that you get one-on-one instruction!
Your teacher will be responding to each of your assignments, helping you to grow in the skills and understandings that are important for you at that particular time. This kind of attention helps you to learn faster and to acquire skills in writing, reading, and thinking more easily.
in a classroom
- or lab
- or at home
Which of these options works best for you? You can choose the way you want to learn. Your instructor will help you decide, based on your Learning Plan, your lifestyle, your work schedule, and other factors. Many Mindquest Academy/College Prep students like to combine some classroom or lab time with study at home. That way you can benefit from being part of a group of other students working directly with a teacher and can also work independently at home, anytime of the day or night!
5. Discover college support services
A big advantage of the Mindquest Academy/
College Prep program is that you not only learn in
academic areas but that you can become acquainted with
services that colleges provide to help students succeed. Services such as counseling and advising - to help you plan your college program; financial aid to assist you with loans, grants, and scholarships; peer tutoring to give you help when you need it; work-study opportunities to earn extra dollars while working with others at the college. Through Mindquest Academy/College Prep you'll learn about these and other support services first-hand.
6. Move into college classes
When you and your instructor feel you are ready,
you can begin taking college classes. A good way to
start is to take a college course while you are in the
Mindquest Academy/College Prep program. You can be
co-enrolled, completing your Learning Plan and getting familiar with what a college course is like. As you get ready to move into college, you can re-take the College Placement Test to check your readiness for college work. Of course, your instructor will know a great deal about the progress you've made in skills and understandings and can help you decide when you are ready to take the next step into college.
